As our new graduates begin their professional journeys, our new and current students focus on their goals with renewed energy. While I continue to marvel at all the wonderful things happening at KCHA, I am also ready to hit the golf course, go boating, take walks, and relish the beauty of the outdoors.

What are you looking forward to enjoying this month? Maybe it’s stargazing, fishing, attending outdoor events, picnicking, or planting your favorite flowers. Whatever it is, I hope you feel a deep sense of refreshed hope and happiness.

Health Talk: The Science of Willpower

Cover of the book: The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of it by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D.

If you have ever wondered why people continue to do things they know are not good for themselves, like smoke, live sedentary lives, not speak their truth, or procrastinate, science has the answers! In the book The Science of Willpower: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It, Kelly McGonigal, PhD, a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, shares the latest research on what willpower is and how it works.

With an engaging voice and compelling research, readers quickly access insight, compassion, and hope when they learn that:

  • Self-discipline isn’t just about being strong-willed; it’s a biological process.
  • People with better control over their actions are happier, healthier, and more successful.
  • Too much self-control can be harmful.
  • Stress and temptation can weaken willpower, but the brain can be trained to strengthen it.

McGonigal’s book offers practical advice and exercises to help you achieve your personal and professional goals.
