From the Director: Everyday Awe

Having been gifted the ability of awareness, I know I am lucky to observe life’s wonders in everyday life. Whether welcoming a new enrollee, guiding a student’s first clinic experience, celebrating a graduate, commuting to work, relaxing in the comforts of home, or golfing in Arizona, I receive the countless gifts of being a part of a wonder-filled world.

This month’s Health Talk article, The Science of Awe, has me feeling even more grateful for the awe-inspiring gift of being a grandparent. When my two-year-old grandchild picks up their tiny play phone and says, “Hi, Papa,” my heart skips a beat. Hearing the genuine joy in their voice, I marveled at the pure, unfiltered expression of love for a man they never met.

One of the most delightful experiences is playing with water alongside them. The sheer joy they derive from splashing and exploring the properties of water is infectious. In these moments, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing playfulness and approaching life with a sense of wonder, much like a child experiencing the world for the first time.

My grandchild’s boundless curiosity and unbridled joy inspire a profound sense of wonder within me. The warmth that floods my chest when they look up with wide-eyed innocence is a reminder of the beauty that exists in connection and shared moments. It’s a gentle nudge to pause, appreciate, and find awe in the simplicity of being present.

Health Talk: The Science of Awe

When was the last time you experienced Awe? You know, one of those moments where you were filled with wonder, an experience of mystery that you couldn’t even fully understand. Maybe, like Shawn, you were awed by a young person’s curiosity and awareness. Perhaps you found yourself awed by the prehistoric sounds of sandhill cranes or the latest Hubble Space telescope images. My most recent experience of awe happened while watching this video of a bald eagle keeping its eggs warm in its nest in Decorah, Iowa, during a snowstorm.

Defining Awe

Awe is not just an emotion; it’s a powerful force that can reshape our perspectives and leave lasting imprints on our minds. Psychologists define awe as an intense emotional experience where we encounter something vast, transcendent, and challenging to comprehend.

Whether witnessing nature’s grandeur, marveling at humanity’s extraordinary achievements, or feeling a deep connection with others, awe has the remarkable ability to leave us spellbound.

The Brain’s Response to Awe:

From enhancing creativity and curiosity to fostering a sense of interconnectedness and well-being, research suggests that awe-inducing experiences trigger unique neurological responses. When we experience awe, our brains release chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins, promoting feelings of happiness and well-being. Additionally, awe has been linked to reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, indicating potential health benefits. Scientists have also found that individuals who regularly experience awe are more likely to think outside the box, solve problems creatively, and embrace novel ideas.

Cultivating Awe in Everyday Life:

As awe-inspiring experiences have been linked to lower stress levels, increased life satisfaction, and a greater sense of purpose, harnessing the power of awe may be a key to unlocking a more fulfilling and enriched life.

Finding moments of awe may be challenging in our fast-paced and often hectic world. However, even simple activities like stargazing, watching children play, or immersing oneself in art or music can evoke this powerful emotion. By intentionally seeking awe-inspiring experiences, we can tap into a wellspring of positivity that can positively impact our mental and emotional well-being.
