Belonging Matters
From the Director: Prioritizing Wellness
For many of us in the health industry, it is expected to prioritize others’ needs over our own well-being. While this dedication is often perceived as commendable, it can lead to burnout, stress, and compromised health. This self-sacrifice can create a cycle in which we become overwhelmed and less effective in our roles.
While working long hours, managing heavy workloads, and facing emotional challenges, it is essential to recognize that caring for oneself is not a luxury—it’s a
necessity.
By prioritizing self-care, we can enhance our resilience and overall effectiveness. Simple practices like taking breaks, seeking support, and setting healthy boundaries can make a significant difference.

This month, let’s encourage ourselves and each other to invest in our wellness, ensuring we have the strength to continue providing exceptional care for others.

Health Talk: 10 Ways to Celebrate National Wellness Month

August is a perfect time to focus on self-care and healthy habits. Whether you’re looking to boost your physical health, mental clarity, or emotional resilience, there are countless ways to celebrate National Wellness Month. Here are ten impactful ideas to help you prioritize your wellness.
Set a Wellness Goal
Start the month by identifying a personal wellness goal. It could be anything from drinking more water to practicing daily meditation. Write it down and track your progress throughout the month.
Create a Morning Routine

Establish a morning routine that sets a positive tone for your day. Incorporate activities like stretching, journaling, or a healthy breakfast to help you start off right.
Get Moving

Physical activity is crucial for overall wellness. Go for daily walks or explore outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, or gardening. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week.
Practice Mindfulness
Dedicate time each day to mindfulness or meditation. Even just five minutes can reduce stress and improve focus. Consider using apps or guided videos to help you get started.
Nourish Your Body

Focus on nutrition by including more whole foods in your meals and snacks. It’s a great time of year to experiment with new recipes featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Connect with Nature
Spend time outdoors to recharge and reconnect with nature. Whether it’s reading under a tree, a stroll in the park, or dipping your feet in a river or stream, immersing yourself in nature can boost your mood and well-being.
Unplug from Technology

Take a break from screens for a day or designate tech-free hours each week. Use this time to relax in a favorite way or connect with loved ones face-to-face.
Prioritize Sleep
Aim for quality sleep by establishing a calming bedtime routine that includes limiting screen time before bed, creating a restful environment, and aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
Volunteer or Give Back

Engaging in community service can enhance your emotional well-being. Find local volunteer opportunities or simple ways to give back, such as helping a neighbor or supporting a local charity.
Reflect and Celebrate
At the end of the month, take time to reflect on your wellness journey. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and consider setting new goals for the months ahead.
National Wellness Month is a great opportunity to

prioritize your health and happiness. By engaging in these ten practices, you can cultivate a holistic approach to wellness that lasts beyond August. Here’s to a healthier, happier you!
